plites overview

plites are flexibly designed single led lights for cyclists who need to see and be seen while riding.

They use a single 3W Luxeon III LEDs controlled by a FluPIC board and are usually powered by 1 or 2 blocks of 3AA batteries (conventional, or rechargeable).  A Fraen narrow beam optic directs a very high proportion of the emitter’s output down a 6 degree conical path.

The emitters are TV1J Luxeon III and have a slightly warm white colour which is especially suitable for riding in the bus at night.  They emit between 65 & 85 lumens. Brightness is user selectable through the FluPIC interface.

The FluPIC Board provides excellent current control and a range of operating functions, including a strobe mode with user settable flash rate, a full power constant beam and two user settable brightness constant beams.

All user settable functions are controlled through the single switch in the lamp and are accessed by turning the lamp on and off within 1 second to scroll between the various options. We’ll post a graphic of this soon.

Using 6 AA alkaline cells a whole night of full beam riding is guaranteed. Selecting a reduced brightness but still providing good close on road visibility, two riders used one set of 6 AAs for over 14hrs riding. Enough for their whole PBP success in August 2007.
